In addition to the federal programs, some provinces also provide additional
retirement income that is means based. In the case of Ontario, there is the
Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) which provides for a guaranteed minimum
income for Ontario seniors. The payments are based on your income or combined
income as a married or common-law couple. It is directly linked to the amount of
your federal GIS monthly payments. They range from a minimum of $2.50 to a
maximum of $83.00 per month
